Hi, I’m Rachel!

My love for pottery began in my high school ceramics class in Massachusetts, which became a sacred space where I could escape my anxiety. My teacher, Ms. Burns, fostered an environment of acceptance and positivity, allowing me to (mostly) let go of my need for perfection and embrace the present moment. As someone who excelled in math and science, I never saw myself as creative, but wheelthrowing gave me a way to combine my analytical mind with a desire for freedom and self-expression.

After a break in college, I rediscovered pottery when I moved to the DC area, where I now work out of District Clay Center. I focus on functional wheelthrown pottery, with an emphasis on alternative firing techniques. I’m particularly fascinated by saggar and obvara, where surfaces are transformed by smoke and atmosphere. I am exploring surface alterations and woodfiring, and am eager to learn soda firing as I further develop my style.

In addition to my studio practice, I teach beginner wheelthrowing classes & raku firing workshops in DC and sell my work in the DC area when I can.

Outside of pottery, I work full time in credit card fraud analytics! I live in DC with my boyfriend, Jack, and our two kitties, Jojo and Loretta.
